Adult reading illiteracy can cause a lot of problems in the adult sector. The fact alone that one cannot read nor write means that he or she lacks the qualifications for engaging in many productive societal activities. People who cannot read or write may not be able to take certain jobs that would otherwise sustain themselves economically, turning them into burdens rather than assets of society. It is no surprise to
find that most cases of poverty or unproductively in individuals and groups alike are caused by lack of education, specifically the ability to read and write.
But why can’t adults go to school to learn to read and write? Adult reading illiteracy has been, by fact a problem that becomes much harder to remedy as the illiterate generation grows older. This is because these adults are barred by the conception that they are too old to go to school and thus have to face the rest of their lives as academically deprived. On the other hand, some adults are too busy earning a living with low-level labor-based jobs that do not require much knowledge but pay very little.
The solution, however, can be found in the concept of adult phonics. This is a method of self-teaching that allows adults to learn how to read outside the classroom themselves. Phonics is actually used to teach children how to read, the only difference it has with its adult counterpart is the self teaching feature. With the help of a variety of audio-visual aids the adult learns to associate English letters with their corresponding sounds in order to be able to pronounce them together when words are formed. Quite simply, adult phonics substitutes the conventional instructor with automated technology that will guide adults to learn how to read in their own time.
