Phonics is a widely used academic form of instruction used as a method to teach students how to read the English language. The concept of phonics lies on the introduction of sounds commonly heard and made by those who speak English words and phrases. By individually familiarizing the student with every letter and group of letters that have their own distinct sounds, he or she becomes accustomed to telling one from the other, and in the process, learn to use them in a sequence when such letters or groups of letters are used in whole words. Such kind of basic knowledge in blending sounds will help individuals learn to identify the proper approximately correct way unknown or newly encountered words are pronounced.reading is fun with phonics

Phonics are also used in decoding various words in order to create a standard of symbols that will be used to identify how certain letters or group of letters are read. For example, the letters “c” and “k”, and the letters “ck” are pronounced similarly, and are represented with the same phonetic symbol, which is /k/. In dictionaries, where words are identified including their pronunciation, these phonetic symbols are found grouped together with the appropriate words being decoded. For example, the word “pat” is illustrated with a phonetic symbol /pæt/, where /p/, /æ/, and /t/ are the phonetic symbols that represent the letters p, a, and t, respectively. Theoretically, any person who is familiar with such phonetic symbols is more likely to be able to know the manner in which unfamiliar words are pronounced.

Phonics is a system of teaching English reading that has been proven to be effective throughout the years in teaching children and adults alike how to read. Being a standardized system, it is important that one learn how to use the phonics system in order to enhance one’s reading capacity.
