Genki English is designed as a program to help children learn the English language. Genki means "fun" and "lively," meaning that the lessons children receive are entertaining and interactive. The website includes many skill sets needed to teach ESL students about the English language, and phonics is one of them.

While Genki English offers a variety of free materials on their website, the main concept is to buy the software that students can use at home or in the classroom to gain full access to the website. You receive a special username and password that gives you access to flashcards, bonus worksheets, and lots more. You receive limited free materials on the website, but the software programs offer the entire curriculum.

Cost:

Looking around the website and using the free materials is, well…free. But, you have limited access to some of the materials without a purchase. Purchasing the "CD Owners Club" option is $159.00 up to $179.00, depending on various options you have to choose from. These are the U.S. prices. There is a calculator to allow other countries to translate their country's cost. You can purchase individual CDs for $34.90. You can also choose an option where you can buy 15 CDs, called a Student Pack, for 1,980 yen a year (Japanese currency). This option lets you mix and match CDs to your teaching needs. Japanese currency is the only pricing optional available for the Student Pack.

Genki English has MP3 songs that you can purchase to be downloaded on your computer for $120.00.

Features:

  • There are plenty of free phonics worksheets available at Genki English. They cover all of the basic phonics skill sets to teach ESL students how to read, sound out, and recognize English letters and sounds.
  • Upon purchase into the "CD Owners Club" you have access to complete printable phonics lesson plans, bonus worksheets, phonics songs, and games and activities.
  • The site offers talking pages, so ESL students can hear letter sounds and word sounds. This is free to use by anyone.

Strengths:

  • The website is used by 7000 teachers a day in over 100 countries.
  • You have access to free materials, as well as much more material when you purchase the CDs.
  • Printable phonics lesson plans are available with the purchase of a "CD Owners Club" membership.

Weaknesses:

  • The site is a little hard to navigate, as there is an abundance of information included.
  • There is no distinct separation between free materials and ones that will only work with a purchase.
